Living Our Faith
The faith is at the heart of who we are and sets us apart from other educational institutions in the New Smyrna Beach community. Through a solid, religious curriculum, taught by certified teachers with catechist training, and a focus on service to others, our students gain a deep understanding of Christ and our Catholic faith. They grow in their love and knowledge of Christ through daily prayer, as well as in the regular celebration of Mass, seasonal liturgical prayer services and events, and spiritual retreats. In addition, we have religious statues, pictures, and prayer spots all around the campus to remind us to live our faith every day.
We pray throughout the day
Prayer is an important part of our day. We begin and finish each school day with prayer and before classes and meals. Plus, students can always chat quietly with God whenever they want. Religion classes are part of our daily schedule for all grades. We start by teaching students about the gifts God gives us. Then, as our children get older, they dive deeper into topics like sacraments, prayer, serving others, Scripture, Jesus' life, and what it means to be Catholic. Second graders prepare for and celebrate their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
We experience Jesus’ love
Students at Sacred Heart Catholic School experience Jesus' love in many ways. They pray, attend Mass, go on retreats, and participate in special liturgical events. They actively grow their faith by participating in school Masses, during which they get involved by reading, praying, presenting the gifts, serving as altar servers and ushers, and singing and playing in the choir.
We share our gifts with others
We think that when we share our gifts and talents with others, we're really thanking God. Your child will get opportunities all year to give their time, skills, and help to others in our school and community. Our students serve others by:
Collecting food and necessities for the poor
Visiting the elderly in nursing homes
Donating to charities locally, nationally, and worldwide
Collecting peanut butter, shoes, schools supplies and more for the Diocese of Orlando mission program in the Dominican Republic
Serving at weekend Masses
Making thank you cards and writing letters of encouragement to those in the military
Picking up trash and beautifying our community
We help each other
We know that when you're little, understanding what happens during Mass can be tough. That's why we have the Buddy System! Eighth students team up with kindergarteners to help them during Mass. Serving as mentors, they make sure the younger ones stay focused and follow along. But it's not just about Mass - these buddies also work together during school activities and see each other around campus. An added bonus is the older kids learn leadership skills while they're at it!
We are role models of faith for each other
Our teachers are shining examples of faith for their students by showing love, kindness, and helpfulness, just like Jesus did. Every day, they teach and act with patience. They integrate our faith in their teaching and create a caring atmosphere where students can see what it means to be Catholic. With everything they say and do, Catholic teachers help students understand their faith better and encourage them to be kind and helpful to others, just like Jesus taught.
